OVO Energy Tariffs 2022: Compare Energy Prices

wooden blocks

Now with over 5 million customers and a large stake in the residential UK energy market, OVO Energy is becoming a household name, and are the second biggest energy supplier in the country - after British Gas who are in the lead - and the biggest UK energy supplier to offer 100% renewable energy as standard.

OVO Energy tariffs compared: Which is the cheapest tariff?

While the cheapest and most cost-effective tariffs vary semi-regularly, below we can give you an outline of the most up-to-date tariff data that we have. However, it’s important to note that this may not reflect the price that you ultimately pay, as there are a wide range of factors that can affect the cost of your energy.

These factors include (but aren’t limited to):

  1. Whether you have a prepayment meter, smart meter or fixed meter
  2. Your choice of payment methods such as direct debit or quarterly billing
  3. Whether your bills are based on smart meter readings or estimated readings
  4. The length of your contract, and the contract type: fixed or variable
  5. Your postcode and the area you live in (as the costs of supplying energy vary based on population)
  6. For SVTs or variable contracts: the going rate in the energy market.

Something that’s unique to OVO is that they also offer interest on customer bills, depending on how long the customer has been with them. The initiative is called the OVO Interest Reward, and when a customer’s energy balance is positive (in credit), OVO will pay 3% interest on this balance in a customer’s first year with them, 4% in their second year and 5% for the third year and any subsequent years. As a loyal customer of OVO, the price paid may differ marginally because of this, because the energy accounts will be kept in credit and topped-up with the interest from OVO.

Read on to find out more about each of OVO’s energy tariffs.

OVO energy tariffs

Does OVO Energy charge standing charges?

Yes, OVO does charge for daily standing charges. The costs vary between tariffs, but generally, their standing charges are as follows:

OVO electricity unit rates and standing charges

The unit rate for electricity with OVO ranges between 15.00p to 17.00p per kWh. A kWh (kilowatt-hour) is the amount of energy that would be required to run a 1000-watt bulb for an hour, and the things that use electricity within your house will vary with their level of power consumption.

More info

For standing charges, OVO’s seem to range between 19.00p-24.00p. Remember that this is the rate that will be charged to you daily to cover the costs of supplying your power to your home, and you’ll be charged for this even if your home is unoccupied, or you use no power.

This isn’t unique to OVO - standing charges are applied to an overwhelming majority of household energy bills in the UK, and there isn’t an OVO tariff available currently that doesn’t use a standing charge.

OVO gas unit rates and standing charges

Currently, OVO’s gas unit rates range from roughly 2.50p a day to 4.00p a day, which is cheaper than electricity.

However, gas standing charges are similar but slightly higher than electricity standing charges, and OVO’s range from 17.00p-28.00p, although this can vary.

For dual fuel customers (those who use both gas and electricity), you’ll be charged daily standing charges for both your gas and electricity, as well as the relevant unit rates for your energy consumption.

Do OVO Energy charge for smart meter installations?

If you’re on or joining OVO’s Better Smart plan (for new customers), they will install a smart meter to your property for free within the first three months of your start date. For their other three tariffs, smart meters aren’t necessary or compulsory, but OVO may get in touch to offer you a smart meter installation anyway, as part of their national roll-out to all homes by 2024.

OVO Energy price changes 2021

The last price change for OVO Energy was implemented on February 23rd 2021. Their 2 Year Fixed Energy and Better Energy plans were increased the headline price of our 2 Year Fixed Energy and Better Energy plans. For Better Energy, their price for single rate increased by 4.4%, and 5.7% for Economy 7. For their 2 year fixed plan has an increase of 0.8% and 1% for Economy 7.

This price change was only applicable to their variable tariff, and not their fixed price tariffs where the price is set for the length of the contract.

OVO Energy business tariffs

While OVO Energy has supplied to business and non-domestic companies previously, they no longer supply energy to business customers. Current customers of OVO Business will be on the Clear Business tariff, but it’s no longer possible for new business customers to request this.

OVO Energy Reviews – What do their customers say?

wind turbines

By January 2020, OVO Energy had acquired Spark Energy, Economy Energy and SSE, creating the second-largest energy suppliers in the UK, after British Gas in pole position. Now, OVO has over 5 million customers, including those from SSE (who are still trading as such for the time being, but are owned by OVO).

One of the most exciting things about OVO Energy is their commitment to renewable energy sources, with customers receiving 100% renewable electricity as standard. Their focus on the environmental impacts of energy consumption goes further still, with a corporate commitment to eventually becoming zero-carbon by 2030 and their initiatives to plant a tree for each customer every year.

Below, we’re going to look at OVO Energy Reviews, customer feedback and their customer service to better understand the UK’s newest energy giant.

What’s OVO Energy’s customer score?

Published at the end of October 2020, the latest Which? Energy survey asked more than 8,000 UK energy customers for feedback on their energy suppliers.

Of the 35 energy suppliers reported, OVO Energy came joint 9th out of 35, alongside ENGIE. Overall, OVO customer feedback was positive, with them earning four out of five stars for: bill accuracy, bill clarity, customer service, complaints handling and value for money. They also earned three out of five stars from customers for their digital tools, which was their lowest score across the board, giving them an overall customer score of 73%.

Just three short years ago, OVO came out on top as the favourite of UK energy suppliers and was the first ever Which? Recommended Provider for energy in 2017.

Interestingly, Spark Energy was included in the energy survey, and they fell into the bottom three on the list, despite being acquired by OVO at the end of 2019. Spark Energy has unfortunately been in the bottom three of the Which? Energy survey for the past few years, and even though their customers have moved under OVO now, this doesn’t seem to have changed perceptions. Spark Energy received two out of five stars in all categories, except digital tools, where they matched OVO with a score of three stars out of five.

Not feeling OVO energy reviews? Well, no need to look anywhere else! By calling the number on the top of the screen, our experts can search the market for you and find you the best deal for your needs. We understand that the UK energy market can be confusing, and that is why we are here!

What do customers say about them?

Reviews on OVO Energy are mostly positive, with around 40,000 customer reviews giving them a 4.2 on Trustpilot - a rating of ‘Great’.

Their positive customer reviews tend to mention the following:

  • Great customer service
  • Clear pricing structures, with clarity at renewal periods
  • green energy tariffs

While their negative reviews talk about…

  • Issues with the switchover process
  • Problems with smart meters after installation such as not updating or sending meter readings automatically
  • Difficulties with IHDS (in-home displays) not working

Outside of Trustpilot - a place where customers are asked to leave reviews - there are a few Google listings for OVO which have a range of feedback, from 3.5 stars given to the Bristol office to 1.8 stars given to the London headquarters by a range of (often disgruntled and unhappy) customers.

Extracts from the annual Which? Energy Survey also highlighted that of the customers who had recently switched to OVO Energy, 65% had done so due to its reputation and/or their environmentally-friendly tariffs. One interesting perk for OVO customers is that they give 3-5% interest on credit balances, which is a USP when it comes to UK energy providers, and this is something else that customers have brought up in their feedback of the brand.

Finally, the Uswitch Energy Awards in 2020 named OVO as 4th best energy supplier for customer satisfaction in the UK. Their customer feedback gave them an overall Customer Satisfaction Score of 88%, and they were awarded the Best Energy Supplier in the following categories: Best Rewards, Best Account Management, Best Smart Meter Experience, Best Meter Reading Services and Best Billing Services. They also came as a runner-up in the Best App category.

Do they listen to their customers?

One key when looking at customer feedback is to look for and read an energy supplier’s responses! OVO seems to have a ‘Trustpilot team’ who work around-the-clock to respond to reviews, investigate issues and give explanations to unhappy customers, often escalating this to the complaints team.

Their public Trustpilot stats also appear to show that they have replied to over 96% of their negative reviews with a two-day response time, which is no mean feat when you consider that they have between 30-50 new customer reviews to respond to each day!

OVO Energy customer service

If you’re an OVO Energy customer in need of support, you can get in touch with the team at their Bristol call centre every weekday from 8 am to 6 pm.

OVO Energy response time

In their latest annual survey, Which? found that OVO were in the mid-range of the customer call centres that they tested for response times. Between September and October 2019, they called all 35 UK energy providers on 12 occasions and timed how long it took to speak to a real member of staff from the customer services team.

OVO came in at 6 minutes and 8 seconds for customer response times, which was position 18 of 35. British Gas came in one place ahead at 4 minutes and 19 seconds, and right behind OVO were SSE at 6 minutes and 22 seconds. However, OVO were one of a handful of providers that offered call-backs and estimated hold times, which customers have found helpful instead of remaining on hold indefinitely.

Have they won awards for their customer service?

In 2019, OVO won the Uswitch Energy Supplier of the Year 2019, which was based on customer service, as well as several other factors. OVO attributed this, in part, to their friendly Bristol-based customer service team.

In 2016, the OVO team won ‘Best Customer Service Team in Europe’ at the European Contact Centre and Customer Service Awards 2016. A year later, they went on to win the ‘UK National Contact Centre Team of the Year’ award in 2017, which are the so-called ’Oscars’ of the contact centre world!

OVO Energy complaints and issue resolution

To make a complaint to OVO, the contact procedures are similar to those for their customer services.

  • Call OVO on 0330 303 5063
  • Send an email to hello@ovoenergy.com

You can also send formal complaints in a letter, or drop in and pay the team a visit to this address:

OVO Energy
1 Rivergate
Temple Quay
Bristol
BS1 6ED

Issue resolution

Their complaints team promise to be in touch within five working days of receiving the customer complaint, and they commit to apologising, providing an explanation of what went wrong and offering compensation where necessary.

Their latest 2020 complaints data showed that from January to March 2020, they resolved 345 of their 392 customer complaints, and that 96% of their complaints were disputing energy usage, failing to refund or credit customers and failure to refund a credit balance once customers had closed their accounts or switched providers.

OVO reviews

OVO Energy in the news

OVO Energy has made the headlines a few times in the past couple of years. Their biggest story was in January 2020, when they were ordered by energy regulator Ofgem to pay £8.9m for charging their customers too much after the energy price cap was implemented by UK government in 2019.

They were caught by Ofgem for sending inaccurate bills and statements to over 500,000 of their customers, with many not receiving a bill at all. In order to avoid a substantial fine, OVO agreed a settlement figure of £8.9m to be paid to vulnerable customers. Despite being aware of overcharging, OVO told Ofgem that it didn’t ‘believe it was an efficient use of resources’ to process 120,000 refunds for less than £10, although some overpayments were as substantial as £4,500 in value.

In a more positive light, OVO made the news in 2020 by launching a new initiative through the OVO Foundation. The foundation created a new £1m programme called ‘Climate Changers’, of which the goal is to inspire and educate younger generations to take action on our current climate crisis. The aim of the funding over the next few years is to save 6,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, and to create 12 ‘tiny forests’ that absorb around 7,200kg of CO2. This new initiative is part of OVO’s wider strategy called ‘Plan Zero’, with a goal to progress to net-zero carbon living and to provide clean and affordable energy to all by 2030.

More info

What is OVO Energy's best plan?

At Switch Plan, we don't believe in a 'best' energy plan. There is no best plan from any supplier. The best plan for you depends on your specific energy needs, as well as the market position of energy suppliers, as prices tend to fluctuate. Give us a ring and we can talk you through your options to ensure that you're not losing out on energy.

If you want to know more about specific tariffs, ring us up and we can give you the most accurate and up-to-date rates.

Does OVO Energy have business energy deals?

Unfortunately, OVO Energy no longer supplies business energy tariffs. So, if your company wants a business energy deal, you will have to look elsewhere. If OVO Energy restarts their business tariffs, we will be sure to let you know.

OVO's Electric Vehicles deal

OVO energy have a deal called EV Everywhere. This means that if you own an electric vehicle, you can join this plan to benefit from free green electricity and a free smart electricity charger for your electric car. This could mean significant savings, as well as doing your bit for the environment!

Does OVO Energy have a boiler service?

With CORGIHomeHeat, OVO members can get a new boiler installed by registered engineers, as well as a free smart thermostat.

OVO's Boiler and Home Emergency cover starts from £5 a month and makes sure that your boiler is working efficiently and properly. You can find out more information on their website.

Does OVO energy support any charities?

In 2014, OVO Energy created the OVO Foundation, aimed at giving young people a sustainable future. It is a charitable initiative that invests in developing projects around the world that advocate for green energy. One of their projects is called Future Builders, which is designed to end homelessness in the UK, helping young people to get work experience by reconstructing run-down properties. Another project they support is called Project Jua, which seeks to improve health and education in rural Kenya.

OVO Energy is also concerned with tackling the climate crisis and has planted over 1 million trees across the UK in their efforts to decarbonise energy.

Furthermore, OVO Energy provide Warm Home Discount to their customers who can't afford to heat their home in the winter. This scheme is specifically for the winter, because variable and flexible energy prices tend to increase based on demand. In the winter, there is more demand for energy, as more people need to heat their home. Low-income families or individuals might not be able to fund this increase, so OVO offers them support during the winter to make sure they can carry on heating their home.

What other information should I know about OVO energy?

Economy 7 tariffs are also available from OVO Energy. An Economy 7 tariff is a double electricity tariff, meaning that the cost of a kWh differs depending on the time you use it. During the day, prices are higher, because there is more demand for electricity. However, during the night, it is much cheaper to use electricity because there is generally less demand. If you are tight on cash or want to save money on your energy bills, it's smart to use electricity during off-peak periods, as your bill will be significantly lower.

Like most other suppliers, OVO Energy also offer prepayment tariffs. This means that you top up your energy card before using it, and when it runs out, you simply top it up again. How do you top it up? You can either go to a local Payzone (a post office, or a supermarket) or if you can simply log into your online OVO account and top it up online.

Does OVO Energy have good customer reviews?

What do their customers say?

According to over 37,000 reviews on TrustPilot, OVO Energy was voted 4.2/5 in terms of customer satisfaction. 66% of reviews deemed the service to be 'excellent' whereas 11% deemed it 'bad'.

This means that, on the whole, customer reviews about OVO Energy's service are positive. Their fuel mix, as well as their customer service, means their customers' experience is generally positive.

Where does OVO source their energy?

OVO’s electricity comes from 39% renewable energy, and 61% natural gas. They no longer use nuclear or coal power to supply their energy. OVO Energy boasts having a more renewable fuel mix than the average supplier in the UK.

On the other hand, their gas supply is only available as a dual tariff. You can upgrade to a 'Green Gas Upgrade', which means that you'll have renewable gas guaranteed for just £5 a month. This means that the gas you use will be entirely carbon-neutral.

OVO and renewable energy

  • With OVO, you can 'go green' for £5 extra a month, meaning that your standard 50% renewable electricity will be upgraded to 100%.
  • Whether you are on a fixed or variable plan, you can upgrade and do your bit for the environment. OVO will also plant 5 trees on your behalf!
  • The same plan applies to upgrading to green gas, as well.
  • OVO Energy launched a campaign called Plan Zero, through which they aim to tackle the climate crisis through investing in people and power. They want to empower people to lead sustainable lives through green and affordable energy.
  • Through aiming to totally decarbonise their energy by 2030, they are calling for greater action towards tackling the climate crisis.

SSE taken over by Ovo Energy: Plans & Reviews in 2022

SSE: The move to OVO Energy

At the start of 2020, SSE was purchased by OVO at a cost of £550m. This was after SSE abandoned a planned merger with NPower in 2018 amid concerns that NPower would not be able to serve its customers, employees, or shareholders effectively. The purchase saw SSE triple OVO’s customer base practically overnight bringing all 3.5 million of their customers to the group.

What happens with the current SSE customers?

Regarding the SSE tariffs, it is important to have in mind that SSE, while still operating under the same brand name, is now a subsidiary of OVO Energy who took on their customers in January of 2020. Since then customers have been slowly been transferred to OVO's tariffs in a way that ensured no SSE customers would experience any noticeable change in their customer experience following the transfer. Nonetheless, while SSE still does offer tariffs to its remaining customers, OVO plans to continue transferring customers to their own tariffs until SSE can be fully dissolved as a supplier.

Having that in mind, when you want to open a new account with SSE, you will automatically be transferred to the website and service of OVO.

How many SSE tariffs are currently live?

Due to the takeover from OVO, SSE tariffs are not available anymore. However, you can still get information about the tariffs on the SSE website. SSE, or rather OVO, have 0 live tariffs at the moment. However, this can change anytime so it makes sense, to check the offers regularly.

SSE tariffs now merged with OVO Energy tariffs: All the details

As a result, we've broken down a basic list of OVO's tariffs in the recent past to display what some of their tariff options may look like. Fortunately, their tariff options are very similar to energy plans that were offered by SSE in the past.

SSE Reviews: What do the customers think?

Renewability and a good range of tariffs are both important factors. But when choosing a potential energy supplier, you need to know that they will prioritise you as their customer and give you the standard of service you expect from a supplier of their size and resources.

The opinions of their existing customers can yield valuable insights as to whether or not they are a good fit for you. Looking at the SSE reviews on Trustpilot, we can see that they are fairly positive. They have a total of 48,885 reviews that have left them with an average review of 4.2 out of 5 possible stars.

Of these:

  1. 72% were "Excellent"
  2. 10% were "Great"
  3. 3% were "Average"
  4. 2% were "Poor"
  5. 13% were "Bad"

The most commonly praised things about SSE were warm and friendly and helpful staff, responsive and helpful live chat, ease of moving account and fast issue resolution. Some reviews mention the member of staff who helped them by name, which is often a good indicator that a member of the team has gone above and beyond.

Among the most commonly criticised were difficulty topping up prepayment cards online, egregiously expensive billing inaccuracies, and a belligerent attitude to outstanding bills — even when the customer was not at fault.

Customer service & complaint resolution

SSE generally fared best in terms of complaint handling and customer service. However, as with all the bigger suppliers, customers have encountered their share of frustrations.

Among the most cited frustrations were:

  • Long delays (with some customers stating that they were kept waiting for an hour or more).
  • Being kept on hold for long periods of time.
  • Aggressive chasing of unpaid bills with one customer stating "when you are late paying, bombarded with emails and texts".

Who is SSE?

In its current form, SSE has had a presence in the energy market since 1998. However, their roots can be traced way back to 1947 when they were known as the ‘Southern Electricity Board’, later becoming known as ‘Southern Electric’. A merger with Scottish Hydro around 20 years ago resulted in the current brand: SSE.

Some of the major steps of that long history:

  • In 1943 the Hydro Electric Development Act led to the creation of the Scottish Hydro Electric Company. A company that would play a key role in Scotland’s hydro
revolution and therefore contribute to delivering Electricity, greater comfort and convenience to thousands of Scots.
  • In 1947, the ‘Southern Electricity Board’ was created, later becoming known as ‘Southern Electric ’.
  • In 1998, Scottish and Southern Energy was founded when Scottish Hydro Electric and Southern Electric merged.
  • Since then, SSE has made a number of acquisitions. SSE acquired the SWALEC in 2000, which operated in Wales, while SSE operated in England and Scotland. In 2004, they acquired Ferrybridge and Fiddler's Ferry power stations, and subsequently an Irish wind farm in 2008.
  • In 2010, Scottish and Southern Energy changed their name and their branding to SSE, forming the company we know today.

SSE was one of the UK’s "Big Six" energy suppliers, along with E.ON, Centrica / British Gas, Scottish Power, N-Power and EDF. As of 2020, it is part of the OVO group, along with OVO Energy, Boost, and Spark Energy.

What to know about SSE?

  • They had around 5 million customers all over the UK.
  • They offered 100% renewable Electricity for domestic and commercial customers.
  • They supplied both Electricity and gas.
  • SSE's headquarters remains in Perth, Scotland.

SSE Energy mix: OVO and Renewability

Similar to its competitor Scottish Power, SSE would generate power as well as supply its own energy. As such, it was able to offer 100% renewable energy, matching customers' usage with power from offshore and onshore wind farms as well as renewable hydro energy.

Along with its parent company, OVO, providing green energy is a high priority for SSE. It aims to increase last year’s renewable energy output by 300% by 2030 to 30TWh. SSE was aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Did SSE have a renewable energy plan?

With their Go Green Tariff, there is the option to pay £3 more to have 100% renewable domestic energy.
For business energy, SSE has created a different tariffs offering businesses 100% renewable, clean energy, that is generated from wind and hydropower. The eligibility of these tariffs depend on the size of the business.

What is SSE Airtricity?

SSE Airtricity is a subsidiary company of SSE plc. Before a 2002 rebranding, they were called Airtricity. Airtricity generates 100% green energy and works out of the Republic of Ireland. They supply natural gas to domestic and business customers, and have a fairly large market share across the country, in third place.

SSE Airtricity offers a variety of tariffs, all of which provide 100% green energy to their customers.

Can I get a smart meter installed with SSE?

Smart meters take the place of your existing gas and electricity meters and give you more information about the energy consumption in your home. SSE tariffs offer free Smart Meters. Here are some things you should know about installing a smart meter with SSE:

  • Firstly, SSE will check your eligibility for a smart meter. They are being handed out bit by bit to customers around the country, so there might be a little bit of a wait.
  • Having a smart meter installed also means that you can track your energy consumption, allowing you to consume energy more wisely, and also track your spending. You can see when you are using energy, and which appliances are wasting the most energy.
  • You can also log into your online account to see a more exhaustive breakdown of your energy consumption.
  • If you do not have an updated smart meter and would like to have one installed, then you should head over to their website and book an installation appointment.
  • Moreover, you are also eligible for an In-Home Display, which is a smart display that connects to your smart meter so you can track your energy usage in real time.

Did SSE offer any additional services?

SSE did offer additional services to their customers which included support programs, such as the Warm Home Discount, or services like their boiler cover services. These services remain available to existing customers of SSE that are still on an active SSE tariff contract, however, these services are also offered by OVO, so once transferred to OVO it is unlikely that your customer experience will change.

Could I get boiler cover with SSE?

Yes, if you are already an SSE customer, you can take out Heating Cover for 12 months through SSE Boiler Rescue. Prices start at £4.95 a month with a Boiler Breakdown Cover. For £23.95 a month you can get the Boiler and Heating in one package.

OVO also offers boiler cover, so even if you are concerned about your boiler cover if you are a current SSE customer, there is no need to fear. OVO Energy will be able to provide you with quality boiler coverage, just as SSE did in the past.

SSE Boiler Services

What kind of support do SSE offer?

SSE offers the Warm Home Discount to their customers who are financially struggling with their energy bills. The Warm Home Discount is a government scheme aimed at assisting those who cannot afford to pay their energy bills during the colder winter months. This is because, during the winter, the price of energy increases to match demand.

Fortunately, OVO energy offers the Warm Home Discount as well, which means that once again you will not have to worry about missing out on this support if you are transferred from SSE to OVO. You can apply for the Warm Home Discount through OVO's application page on its website.

You can download the MySSE mobile app for free where you can submit meter readings, get in touch with customer services and top up your prepayment card.
