The recent energy crisis has made things difficult for university students across the UK. As flat providers change their contracts to keep up with the rising cost of living, students have been left seeking ways to make their homes more energy efficient. Have no fear, we’ll show you six great ways to insulate your student home on a budget!

With September coming to a close, students across the country are settling into their new university homes. But, things are a little different this year.

The UK energy crisis has meant that many landlords have revoked their “bills included” offers just days before the start of term. This means that students will be left paying higher energy costs just as the winter approaches. Even UniHomes, a leading platform for student accommodation, has had to leave some students high and dry on their bills. The company, whose services typically include utility management, has had to toss out some energy packages whilst raising the prices for others.

Fortunately, we’re here to help. A study showed that home insulation could cut energy costs (and carbon emissions!) by 50%. So, we’ve put together a list of ways to keep your student home insulated with the bits and pieces already around your house. These tips are easy, cost-effective and so cute!

  1. Barricade your window sills

Placing items on your window sills can act as a second barrier between your home and the cold air outside. Grab your books and line them against your window. Or, bunch up the bottom of your drapes and tuck them onto your window sill.

  2. Cover up your walls

Cold walls could be costing you ⅓ of your heating. Hang up your trendy wall tapestries to top up on your wall insulation. The thicker the material, the more effective it’ll be (a quilt or blanket will also do!)

  3. Add a rug to your bedroom floor

Did you know that your shaggy old rug could help keep your room warm? A nice, dense rug will keep warm air trapped inside its fibres. Use these rugs in rooms with wooden floors – these are the spaces that lose the most heat! For extra coverage, invest in a rug underlay; these are typically used to prevent slippage, but are super effective in doubling up on insulation.

  4. Hang up your heaviest curtains

Heavy curtains are effective in acting as a barrier between the cold air outside and the air air inside your room. Remember: the thicket the curtains, the better they’ll be at insulating your space. Plus, these will add to your room’s cosy aesthetic.

  5. Seal those gaps

For a heavier duty solution, invest in some draught strips. These go for as little as £3 and could save you around £45 a year. Fit these into your door and window frames – wherever you feel a draught coming in.

  6. Hot water bottles and jumpers

If all else fails, layer up in your toastiest clothes and surround yourself with hot water bottles. These are great at providing warmth and comfort for hours!

Those are our tips and tricks on keeping your home toasty throughout the winter – pretty much for free!

Remember, if you need any further financial support, there are schemes you may be eligible for. Also, consider reaching out to your energy provider to arrange an alternative payment plan or grant.
