In the context of an energy crisis across international markets, energy suppliers such as Enstroga have been ceasing trading one by one. Enstroga officially went bust on the 29th of September, unable to keep up with rising wholesale gas prices. But customers shouldn't panic: their case is being dealt with by Ofgem, who will transfer all of the customers to Eon. In the meantime, what should old Enstroga customers be doing?

Enstroga Energy Has Gone Bust
As you may have heard on the news, the UK energy market is currently under an immense amount of stress as a result of a global gas shortage and the Ukraine and Russia conflict. These forces drive up costs and putting several energy suppliers out of business. Enstroga is one of these suppliers, as of the 29th of September.To learn more about this and stay updated you can read our page on the UK energy crisis.
Enstroga claimed to offer customers the best of both worlds. As part of a Europe-wide energy group, they claimed to be able to deliver the cheapest prices on the market. However, they also had the ethos of an independent supplier, emphasising a people-first approach to business.

What should Enstroga customers do now?
As of right now, if you are an Enstroga customer, the key is to be patient. In reality, there is nothing you should be doing, whether it be switching suppliers or cancelling payment methods - neither of which you should, therefore, be doing. Find out what is being done for you by reading on.
What happened to Enstroga?
Enstroga is one of the more recent disappearances on the UK energy supplier market. Its trading stopped following an already long line of disappearing suppliers over the course of 2021, including names such as Avro Energy, Utility Point, and People's Energy, but also many other names. This started as early as January 2021, but the months of August and September have been particularly harsh for energy suppliers.
This is linked to the relaunching of a number of businesses and general activity after Covid-19 restrictions started dying down, meaning the demand for energy has risen drastically at a moment when stocks are relatively low. This means the wholesale price of gas has gone up, to a point where, partly due to price caps, a number of energy suppliers are unable to keep trading. This is clearly the case for Enstroga, a smaller supplier in the UK who was particularly vulnerable to this whole conjuncture.
Will my electricity or gas supply be interrupted?
No, you will keep getting the energy you usually do - you won't even notice the difference. While a lot of things will definitely change for you due to Enstroga going bust, your energy supply is not one of those things.
Should I continue to pay Enstroga, or should I cancel my payment methods?
For now, don't cancel anything, whether you were paying Enstroga through direct debit, standing order, or direct payment. The idea is to wait until Ofgem appoints a supplier to all Enstroga customers, at which point this supplier will get to each customer individually and set up an account properly. Since there may be credit and debt issues to be resolved before everything returns back to normal, you have to keep in place any payment systems you had set up for your Enstroga bills.
Should I take a meter reading?
Yes, we recommend you take the time to take a meter reading, the sooner the better. This is really the only action you need to take as customers of a supplier who has gone bust.
Having the information from your meter reading at hand will enable you to help make sure your new account is set up properly and swiftly, which in turn means that if you want to switch to another supplier or offer, that process will also be much more efficient. Overall, this will make your life easier and ensure you're ready to deal with the upcoming supplier transfer.
What happens if I had credit or debt with Enstroga?
This will depend on the supplier who is given the responsibility to take over all of Enstroga's customers. So far, however, the suppliers appointed to receive customer contracts belonging to suppliers affected by the crisis have always said they would honour credit owed to clients. E.on will probably do the same for customers of Enstroga.
In terms of debt, if it possible you will have to pay your debt to Enstroga to, or at least through, your new supplier. This will be communicated to you once Eon contacts you.
Will my bills go up with Eon?
Ofgem will automatically put you on a "deemed" tariff at Eon. You will get the contract details when they contact you personally and give you information on its rates and the resulting energy bills.
When Eon have contacted you, you are free to shop around for cheaper tariffs and even to switch to another supplier. However, this is not possible as of right now.

EON Variable Rate Tariffs
Eon has a standard tariff for variable tariffs. The benefit of a variable tariff is the freedom to switch tariffs. But this comes at a price, in the form of the possibility of higher tariffs whenever the market price is higher.

Eon Prepaid Tariffs
Eon also enables the use of prepaid meters. With this sort of meter, you do not pay according to usage, but charge the meter and the credit is slowly depleted.

Eon Economy 7 Tariffs
Eon also offers Economy 7 tariffs for customers who have an Economy 7 meter.
As mentioned earlier, these tariffs have two separate tariffs, one for peak consumption periods and one for off-peak consumption periods.

When will Eon contact me?
This will probably take only a few weeks. They probably have already contacted you but if not, you can also contact them yourself. Since Enstroga only has 6000 customers to transfer, we can assume that the new supplier will make short work of contacting them compared to other cases.
As for how you will be contacted, we do know that Shell needs a current and active home address to contact you. This means checking that all your information is up to date, which applies to you all the more if you have recently moved home or are in the middle of doing so.
Can I switch suppliers now?
Yes if you want you can switch now at the moment. However, we do not advise you to do given the situation in the energy market. Prices are very very high, and it will be very difficult to find a cheaper rate at a different supplier.
What if I was already in the process of switching suppliers?
If, before Enstroga's disappearance, you had for whatever reason decided to switch to another supplier, your switch should happen as planned. This only depends on how official the switch was, or how far along the process was. If you're unsure of this, you are free to contact whichever supplier you were planning to join. If the request hadn't properly gone through, not to worry - you will be part of the transfer of Enstroga customers to a new supplier, and will not be left to you own devices.
Who were Enstroga?
Enstroga may be an unfamiliar name in the UK, but despite appearances to the contrary, they hadn’t just appeared out of nowhere. They were part of a large energy supply group that spans Europe, with presences in Spain, Germany, Austria and Portugal.
Enstroga Fuel Mix: Were they a green supplier?
Enstroga advertised itself as supplying "greener energy". However, its fuel mix was not 100% renewables. In fact, renewables accounted for just over 30% of their energy fuel mix, with the lion’s share of Enstroga’s energy coming from natural gas. In the table below, we break down Enstroga’s overall energy fuel mix.

As we can see, Enstroga were in line with the UK average in terms of renewability. While they were certainly greener than some smaller suppliers, they were by no means the most sustainable option on the market.
Was Enstroga any good? What did their customers say?
Enstroga were sitting pretty squarely in the middle of the road with a modest array of tariffs and a pretty average energy fuel mix. Perhaps their customer service made all the difference to their added value?
According to Citizens Advice’s energy supplier rankings, Enstroga were ranked 33rd out of 38 suppliers at the time of writing.
The brand scored very well for billing accuracy, call centre wait times (just 6 seconds on average), and fast switching. However, they were let down by their customer complaints to third parties which stood at 294.9 per 10,000 customers.
Enstroga customer reviews
Perhaps looking at some Enstroga customer reviews would help us to better understand Citizens Advice’s less than stellar ranking.
If we take a look at Enstroga’s Trustpilot page, we can see that they fared a little better there. They had an overall customer score of 2.8 out of 5 which put them squarely in the realm of "Average".
Enstroga had 1,082 customer reviews. Of which:
- 210 (19%) were "Excellent"
- 59 (5%) were "Great"
- 29 (3%) were "Average"
- 25 (2%) were "Poor"
- 759 (70%) were "Bad"
Positive reviews cited helpful staff who were knowledgeable and polite, with positive experiences both in switching and issue resolution. Accurate bills and a responsive attitude to adjusting Direct Debits in line with use also featured in positive reviews. A number of positive reviews mentioned customer service team members by name. A clear indication that the reviewer felt that they had gone the extra mile.
Negative reviews, however, were more numerous. They cite communications difficulties with customer service staff, with poor spoken English an occasional feature in reviews. Ongoing disputes, billing inaccuracies and difficulties with refunds were also prominently featured in negative reviews.
Enstroga was relatively proactive in responding to customer reviews. It had responded to 68% of negative reviews, and typically responded within 1 week.

Should I switch supplier now?
We don´t recommend you to switch right now. The rates at all suppliers are very high at the moment.
I was in the process of switching from Enstroga, what will happen?
No need to do anything. Your old supplier and your new one will continue with the switching process as normal.
Will my rate go up at E.on?
Because of the energy crisis and the Ukraine war energy, prices are very high. Therefore, the rates for you at E.on will almost certainly be higher.
Should I do anything now that Enstroga has gone bust?
We advise you to wait before doing anything until E.on is in touch with you. You will be able to receive the options they have available for you.
